I bought a 2007 Toyota corolla in January of 2007. I noticed two rusting nuts underneath the front part of the car. I took it to the dealership and was told that the salt air in Japan caused some rusting in the nuts and that it didn’t really pose a problem. I also noticed a rust spot in the middle portion of the front (underneath) as if it has been scratched. The dealership replaced the nuts and painted over them. Question: is this normal for a new car to develop rust in a climate not known to be sea-like or have harsh winters? BTW, I live in Atlanta, GA. I have had this car for about 18 months and hope to keep it for a decade. Are all imported cars like this in regards to the rust issue?

Rust can affect any car of any age. The recent increase in acidic and salt in rain bears an effect on all cars. What you’ll find is the car was possibly built in 2006 (summertime probably) then stored in Japan near the docks for 6 months (Common place for all manufacturers) then shipped you the car (on salty sea’s) and thus has increased the chance of rust.

My advise although not a problem, change them now so that you find it easier in the future to undo them if needed. Toyota’s like all Japanese cars have excellent engines, so you will find the body will rot before the engine dies.

    Good Luck.

yes, many new cars develop rust spots on the little car parts such as bolts and nuts. don’t worry your car paint and body are better coated and protected from the element so they don’t usually rust unless there’s a scratch. the little things are not be worried about and they are hidden anyways.
