either way when you bring it back the U.S will make you pay taxes on it
Try this link:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
It’s got a good amount of information on what it takes to import a vehicle. Also links to importers.
well, you certainly couldn’t drive it back
Haha! First off, if you want to bring a Japanese car to America, go to JapanPartner.com they have the best selection, and you don’t even have to leave your country. However, there are many downsides to importing a car from another country. 1.) If done by boat (which is almost gauranteed to be how you would do it) it does more wear and tear on the vehicles suspension, engine, and electrical systems than you would ever want. 2.) A Nissan Skyline does not meet the USA emissions standards, and you would have to take it to a specialty shop in southern California to get it up to spec( will cost around ten thousand dollars). 3.) Expect to shell out another ten thousand on repairing or replacing all of the engine, suspension, and electrical systems because of 1.) 4.) The cost of shipping a car is by the total size, and the Nissan Skyline is a larger car, so expect to pay around four to five thousand just to have it shipped here. 5.) May have to deal with Customs Enforcement, and they would probably impound the Skyline if they searched it, as it is not up to spec.
Firstly, there is only one model of skyline that is eligible for importation to the USA anymore, the R32 and R34 models are not on the allowed list, and you can only bring in an R33 that was manufactured between 1996-98. This is of course if you want it to be road legal. Then of course you have the costs of shipping it to the USA. Once it has reached the usa it has to be made safe to USA standards, some of which includes replacing ALL the glass, which is retardedly expensive done stateside, as all the glass has to be imported from somewhere that makes it in the skyline sizes, that is also made of safety glass that is up to USA specs, so usually from Australia or England. Theres a huge list of small things that will need to be done to your car.
Also, as you’d be importing the car yourself, you have to pay a Customs Bond of THREE TIMES the value of the car, this is returned to you after a year if your car has been brought up to specs, but its alot of money to outlay at once.
Then of course theres taxes and Insurance, which is NOT cheap. I pay over $400 a month for my Skylines insurance, and i have a perfect driving record and am over 25. Thats for the R34 skyline though, the insurance on the r33 and r32 is much cheaper.
Also theres 4 states that will NOT pass a skyline due to emissions, not that they make too much emissions, its all to do with the lack of an OBDII system in them. Some states just put a thing up the tailpipe and test that way, but as i recall Cali, Penn, Rhode Island and Mass require the OBDII system that can be plugged into a computer and emissions tested that way.
I really would suggest you find one thats already legalised in USA, there are a few around if you look in the right places. Theres also some R32 and R34 Skylines about that were brought in BEFORE the law change, and are still legal. If those are models you’re after.
I hope I haven’t put a damper on your idea, Skylines are great cars, and i drive mine daily and love it to pieces. I imported mine myself, so I know all the ins and outs of it.
Try www.chkimports.com I know they have 4 Skylines in stock at present, all tagged and titled. As i recall they range in price from $26,000 for the R32 up to $70,000 for the GTR Vspec beauty they have.
